Six Lessons Learned In 2020 That Should Never Be Forgotten
Dec 14, 2020If you feel like you've just survived the toughest year of a century, you're not alone. Each of us has tucked away valuable lessons from 2020 that can be instrumental in making 2021 more fulfilling and prosperous. Here are six lessons learned that are worth carrying forward:
Truly Anything Is Possible...So Accept the Unexpected
Unimaginable events unfolded, from school closures and online learning to streamed church services and funerals. Very few things are sacrosanct, and many aspects of life previously deemed perfect can be improved by thinking differently. Accepting the unexpected allows for quicker adaptation and impact on the unfolding events.
So What?
- Examine things deemed impossible; challenge the status quo.
- Question why things are done the way they are and consider alternative approaches.
- Believe that all things are possible, fostering a mindset of adaptability and innovation.
As Social Animals, Gathering Together Is a Must
Even introverts miss the chemistry, synchrony, and connectivity of real-life human gatherings. Online communities offer a sense of togetherness, but they lack the shared energy of in-person interactions.
So What?
- Take the opportunity to connect more seriously when in-person gatherings are possible.
- Turn off distractions and focus on genuine, face-to-face connections.
- Cherish the joy of touching, hugging, and being with others.
Time with Family Is Critical, and So Is Our Time Alone
The unexpected increase in family time was enjoyed by many. Personal downtime is crucial for individual health and happiness. The power of rituals and routines helps to balance family time and personal space.
So What?
- Commit to spending quality time with family while respecting the need for alone time.
- Establish and maintain routines that allow for both family bonding and personal rejuvenation.
Everything Can Divide Us If We Don't Think for Ourselves
Divisive figures and media can deepen political and societal divides. Following those who promote division contributes to societal disunity. Media sources with financial interests in division should be approached with caution.
So What?
- Be mindful of divisive influences and seek balanced perspectives.
- Think critically and avoid blindly following divisive narratives.
- Explore diverse media sources to gain a broader understanding of various perspectives.
Our Seniors and Vulnerable Populations Need to Play a Bigger Part of Our Lives
The pandemic highlighted the isolation and vulnerability of seniors. As soon as possible, seniors and vulnerable populations should be integrated back into the center of family life.
So What?
- Prioritize the involvement of seniors and vulnerable populations in family activities.
- Make an effort to include them in celebrations and daily life.
- Acknowledge their importance and actively engage with them.
Mental Health Is Every Bit as Important as Physical and Financial Health
The impact of the pandemic on mental health has been profound. Stress, anxiety, and depression are prevalent, emphasizing the need to prioritize mental well-being. Taking care of mental health should be normalized and openly discussed.
So What?
- Recognize the importance of mental health in overall well-being.
- Normalize conversations about mental health and share personal experiences.
- Prioritize mental health days and seek professional support when needed.
As we step into the new year, let's carry these lessons forward, using them as building blocks for a more resilient, connected, and compassionate future.
