Family Friendly Fortnite: Friend or Foe?

awareness dangers fortnite kids mindful parenting parenting video games Apr 20, 2018

Is Fortnite a friend or foe? This question echoes in the minds of many parents as they navigate the gaming landscape with their children. As a parent of three teenage boys who love Fortnite, I understand the concerns and debates surrounding this popular game. Here are some reflections and questions every parent should consider:

The Viewer’s Complaints:

- Is it a shooter game? Yes!

- Are the kids obsessed with it? Yes!

- Is it okay for kids? It's teen-rated. But you need to know your teen.

- Am I for or against it? Yes! And I’m not trying to escape the issue; the problem is that there are people that shouldn’t play it, and there are others that it won’t really matter. For me, it's just the next thing in a long line of concerns parents have faced. The problem isn't Fortnite; it's how we handle Fortnite.

Here are four questions to ponder:

  1. What Is Your REAL Concern?

Focus on the fire, not the Fortnite. It's a game, and worrying about it should be in context with other concerns. Is your concern based on facts about games, society, or your child? Are you really connected and close to your child, or is worry heightened when there's distance?

  1. Are You Really Connected and Close To Your Child?

Sometimes, worry peaks when there isn’t a strong connection with your child. Don't make it about video games when it is really about healthy, connected, and loving families. Your insights as a parent need to be respected as long as you are responding from your connection, not your fears.

  1. Do I Really Understand Why They Want To Play?

Spend time understanding why they play. What are they seeking from the game? Have you ever sat and watched them play? Try to understand the game from their perspective. Spend an hour in their shoes and try to figure out what is really going on in their head.

  1. How Can I Use Fortnite To Teach Bigger Lessons?

Use the game to facilitate bigger conversations about managing violence, time, moderation, addictions, social pressure, teamwork, and fairness. Video games can be a microcosm of life, offering opportunities to learn important life lessons.

In conclusion, Fortnite can be a friend or foe depending on how we handle it. By maintaining a strong connection with our children, understanding their perspective, and using the game to facilitate meaningful conversations, we can turn Fortnite into a tool for teaching valuable life lessons.
