Bringing Back The Village: 4 Principles to Strengthen Community Connection
Mar 20, 2023In the wake of socially restrictive changes brought about by Covid and the shift to online living, the sense of community and connection in neighborhoods and villages has suffered. Humans, as social creatures, need interaction, support, and a sense of belonging. Instead of waiting for external factors to shape our communities, let's intentionally bring back the village. Here are four principles to restore neighborhoods to a higher level of community, connectedness, and collaboration.
- Take More Responsibility for Strengthening Your Village
Principle: "Everyone is really responsible to all men for all men and for everything." - Fyodor Dostoevsky
Action: Foster a sense of responsibility to one another and the community. Native American Tribes make decisions considering their impact on future generations. Get to know your neighbors to build a stronger sense of responsibility and support.
- Open Your Heart and Get to Know Others Deeper
Principle: "Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion." - Einstein
Action: Practice unconditional love by accepting others as they are. Look beyond differences and find common ground. Mr. Rogers emphasized that love is an active noun, requiring effort and acceptance through challenging times.
- Energize the Community with Your Strengths and Service
Principle: Bring your energy and get involved in community activities. Use your strengths to contribute positively.
Action: Be proactive in community engagement. If you're extroverted, bring your energy to events; if introverted, support in setup or takedown. Use your profession to serve others. Volunteering and participating in local activities can energize the community.
- Be A Light Not A Critic
Principle: "There are three ways to ultimate success. The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind." - Mr. Rogers
Action: Lift others up instead of criticizing. Wave to your neighbors, connect with them, and treat them with kindness. Share positive stories about the community. Be a connector, utilizing the talents and services of those around you.
By embodying these principles and taking intentional actions, we can bring back the village spirit, fostering stronger communities where individuals feel connected, supported, and valued.
