4 Keys to Tackle Tough Conversations

Do you have “explosive” topics in YOUR relationship? You know, the ones that you can’t seem to communicate about, without it turning into an argument?

Well you’re not alone, and I’m here to help. Here are 4 simple keys to help your conversations be more productive. 

First key, is to choose the right time. High, negative emotions tend to derail our conversations. So find a time when you’re both in a good, neutral head space, mentally and emotionally. 

Next, is to set a positive tone. Having met with thousands of couples, I’ve found that in any argument, couples tend to agree on about 80% of what they’re fighting about. Yet, it’s that 20% where they disagree, that they end up spending all their time talking about. So before you dive in to where you disagree, start by establishing where you’re together! This creates a safe space to remain open and unreactive as we communicate.

Next key is to Listen to understand, not to respond. Remember, your partner doesn’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. Avoid interrupting, and show you’re partner you’re understanding, by reflecting back what they’re saying.

The final key is to compromise. Remember, you don't have to be in 100% agreement, to come to a successful resolution. So be flexible, and willing to work together to come up with a solution that’s a win win for both of you.
